丹霞山座落於仁化縣城南約9公里處，距韶關市區56公里。丹霞山與南海羅浮山、博羅羅浮山、肇慶鼎湖山並列為廣東四大名山，1988年被國務院定為國家級風景名勝區。全山均為紅色砂礫岩，遠眺全山，“色如渥丹，燦若明霞”，因而又有人稱之為“紅石花園”。它的地質岩層是由碎屑紅巖，礫石巖和粉狀沙岩所組成，含有鈣質，氧化鐵和少量石膏，呈丹紅色，是砂岩地勢的代表。這種地形和福建的武夷山、韶關的金雞嶺等同屬丹霞地貌。丹霞山古稱燒木佛舊地，又稱長老寨。據《廣東省通志》記載，丹霞山在殘唐五代時期已有佛教居士法雲在山上之錦石巖憩息，至南寧時期，有僧伽構造堂室，供奉佛像。明代末年(公元1645年)，虔州巡撫李永茂、李充茂兄弟來山經營，開鑿石階修築關門，建造房舍，作為隱居之所，並更名為丹霞山。

碧海龍吟為丹霞新十二景之一。1984年在右側的山谷靠錦江處修築了一個人工湖泊，名為碧湖，湖面寬137畝，庫容量達58萬立方。這個人工湖泊形如一彎新月，湖水浩淼，波光粼粼，在碧若玉盤的湖面上倒映著丹霞山的秀美身姿。若駕一葉扁舟，於碧波中尋幽攬勝，傾聽那龍吟似的汨汨泉聲，自然可以令人生髮出萬般遐思。在溢翠賓館後面的錦江河上，有一條鐵索橋，是通往南岸錦園度假村的行人索橋，名為“九索橋”，又稱“鵲橋”。該橋建於1986年，橋長80米，寬2米多。由五條鋼索平行並列為橋身，上面鋪木橋作橋面，兩側各有兩條鋼索作為扶手。整個橋身就靠這九根鋼索連結在兩頭的橋墩上。遊人走在橋上，整條橋就會左右搖擺，但又絕對安本，可謂有驚無險。站在橋下仰視鵲橋，有如凌空飛彩練;站在橋上俯瞰錦江，則見碧水映長虹。這裡既是溝通錦江兩岸的交通要道，又是一景觀，被稱作“九索長虹”。
